Environmental House - Whitman College

Whitman College Whitman College is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state, and is one of the most beautiful university grounds we have encountered. The buildings are grand with a nice mix of 19th century and modern styles. The entire campus is agreeably integrated into the downtown and residential areas.

When we saw that the Dukes of Dixieland had a concert scheduled on campus, we immediately scrambled for some tickets. The venue was Cordiner Hall, a 1,400 seat concert auditorium on the Whitman campus. It is a striking building with superb acoustics due to its curved walls.

The musicians chosen to continue the Dukes tradition of New Orleans Jazz are a top-notch ensemble. The piano player (Scott Obenschain) was absolutely unbelievable as he boogied on the nine-foot Steinway grand piano. The clarinet player (Earl Bonie) brought down the house with a soulful rendition of Just A Closer Walk With Thee. We have rarely witnessed such a bowled over reaction by a crowd to a performance … even the band was dumbfounded … it gave us goose bumps. It was certainly a night to remember … too bad we forgot to bring the camera!
