Dayton — This is a well preserved small farming community that has a great number of historic buildings, 117 to be exact ... but we didn’t stop to count them all. It is also home to the packing plant that supplies one-third of the world’s asparagus (sadly, the plant will close in 2006). The historic downtown is filled with shops, vintage business signs, murals, and an old fashion soda fountain. Two structures that have been lovingly restored to their original splendor by the community are:
Dayton Historic Depot
This is the oldest existing railroad depot in the state and was used continuously until 1974. This Victorian depot, with its elaborate detailing and stick Eastlake styling, is the most charming depot we have seen. It originally had quarters for the stationmaster upstairs which may explain the unusual addition of the balcony.
Columbia County
Courthouse Built In 1887, it is the oldest courthouse in the state and is still in use by the county government. This beautifully carved staircase led us to an equally impressive courtroom on the second floor. (Page 2 of 3) Copyright © 2006 TrailerGypsies.com. All Rights Reserved. |
