Tucked away in a corridor of the Capitol, we were surprised to see a plaque that displayed the Children of the Confederacy Creed. Pay particular attention to the second paragraph.
The wooden doors throughout the capitol are enormous and are a real architectural element. The unusual woodwork on the frames and valances were originally carved in Michigan, brought by rail to Austin and then installed and finished on site.
The double acid
etched frosted glass panels helped bring natural light into the
corridors of the building which was designed before the common use of
electrical lighting systems.
House of Representatives Chamber is the largest room in the building. Behind the speaker’s rostrum is enshrined the original flag from the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto.
The Senate Chamber has two large paintings by noted early Texas artist H.A. McArdle who spent 40 years researching and painting the sweeping view of two important battles in the history of Texas … the "Dawn at the Alamo" and the "Battle of San Jacinto." Dawn at the Alamo — The Moral Victory Battle of San Jacinto — Retributive Justice We found the ornate staircases quite appealing. Trudging up and down them was another story!
In addition to the brass hinges, we were blown away by the artistry and detail on the brass hardware throughout the Capitol.
