A short drive from Sutherlin is the tiny hamlet of Oakland. This one time boom town has a historic main street lined with brick storefronts from the 1890s that now contain a multitude of antique stores, curio shops and art galleries.
Upon inspection, the storefronts reveal a wealth of architectural details.
Sutherlin’s token yuppie haven is the White Horse Coffee and Tea Co. Here Sherry hugged the statuary and Danny was introduced to and started his love affair with quadruple shot Americanos. The dreary mill town of Roseburg appears not to have recovered from the devastating 1959 explosion and fire that leveled a 50 block area. One exception to all dearness is its world class Douglas County Museum. The professional displays depicting historical and current working conditions in the lumber industry were powerful and instilled in us a new found respect for the men, both past and current, who work in this dangerous and unglamorous occupation.
This quaint depot from the nearby town of Dillard was relocated to the Douglas County Museum grounds. (Page 2 of 2) Copyright © 2006 TrailerGypsies.com. All Rights Reserved. |
