This old theatre marquee was attached to the side of a bakery across from Riverside Park. A highlight of our visit was visiting the City Library. Corvallis did not have a Carnegie library. Instead the Woman's Club (designed in the gothic style in 1931 by Pietro Belluschi) served as the city’s library for many years. To meet the needs of the community, this structure has been flawlessly integrated into a new state of the art library. The original Woman's Club architecture was kept intact and now serves as the periodicals room. This room, with its arched beams and leaded windows, is furnished with wooden tables and about 20 wing back chairs that beckoned us to browse the largest variety of magazines and newspapers we have seen in a library.
The Commemorative Riverside Park along the Willamette River pays homage to the steamship terminal that put Corvallis on the map in the 1850s. We learned that the town was a shipping center because for a time it was as far as steamships could travel upriver from Portland. Steamships ran between Portland and Corvallis until 1915.
Riverside Park — a great place to walk, ride a bike, or just relax. Gypsy Guide — Corvallis and Albany are just 11 miles apart ... so it is easy to see both cities during one visit. We stayed at the Blue Ox RV Park in Albany ... nice big wide pull-thru sites ... located near I-5 ... but far enough away to avoid the traffic noise. Allann Brothers Coffee (aka The Beanery) is nearby and serves up an excellent Americano. No Wi-Fi here ... but their Downtown Corvallis location on 2nd Street offers it. New Morning Bakery in Corvallis (also on 2nd Street) is the place for lunch ... while Great Harvest Bread Company around the corner on 1st Street offers a fantastic selection of breads and muffins to take home. In Albany ... don't pass up the pizza at Pizza King on Lyon Street ... and for you coffee addicts ... Boccherini Coffee And Tea on 1st Avenue is just the ticket.
