The fabled Great Falls, described by Meriwether Lewis as “the grandest sight I ever beheld…” have been erased from the landscape by the Ryan Dam. Only by studying historic photographs and lithographs were we able to appreciate the grandeur of the roaring, thundering spectacle that once could be heard from miles away. From the viewing platform at the Ryan Dam the outline of the rocky cascade of the once majesty Great Falls can still be seen. A panorama is included in our Panorama Gallery.
To reach the viewing platform, one must cross a rickety suspension bridge over a deep gorge. Signs warn of strict weight limits and the dangers of swaying.
We were amazed to discover an Electric Stove Kitchen at the dam. Demonstrations using electric appliances were needed to prove the safety of the "new fuel".
A short distance from the dam we spied this marker. You can click here to read it. (Page 2 of 2)
