Welcome!Gypsy TourMontanaFort Benton

The 1884 Chouteau County Courthouse has numerous historic photographs and memorabilia.

This is the site of the first bridge to span the Missouri River.

Fort Benton’s Montana Heritage Complex is one of the best local museums we have visited. We were impressed by the displays illustrating how farm life evolved over the last 80 years. Who knew wooden plows, giant cultivators, water pumps and rows of kerosene stoves could be so interesting? We especially enjoyed the exhibit of Karl Bodmer prints from the Maximilian Expedition.

The crown jewel of the museum is the William Hornaday bison. The model for the U.S. buffalo head nickel, was the large bison on the right.

On the museum grounds is the Homesteaders Village … abandoned buildings were relocated and restored to recreate a typical 1900’s rural community.

This homesteader home looked as if the family had just left. An alien abduction, perhaps?

Danny was captivated by this vintage gas station

Today the town of Fort Benton serves as the hub for Montana's biggest wheat producing county. As we drove out of town Danny took a panorama of a wheat harvest along the Missouri River.

We do not receive wisdom, we must discover it for ourselves, after a journey through the wilderness which no one else can make for us, which no one can spare us, for our wisdom is the point of view from which we come at last to regard the world.
