The exterior of lodge, while not as dramatic as the interior, is charming. The original shutters are ornamented with Eastern Woodland flower motif.
As we left, we paused at the dining room entrance to reflect on our three night stay ... and the delicious meals. Because we were isolated from the outside world … no internet, TV, radio, cell phone service or newspapers ... we felt that we finally understood the original mission of Naniboujou ... to get ''back to the beginning of things."
The small village of Grand Marais is full of charm and we found it is easy to understand why it’s an enclave for artists. The picturesque crescent harbor with its seagulls and Coast Guard station reminded Danny of our old stomping grounds … Morro Bay, California.
The downtown is literally situated at waters edge. As we wondered around the cafes, unique shops and art galleries the view of the harbor with its lighthouse, boats and tiny forested peninsula aptly named Artists’ Point were never out of view.
Danny surrendered to his inner artist when he shot this foggy bayscape.
Ya gotta love a building that has an enormous Walleye sticking out of it. If you need leeches, a worm whacker or beaver flicks (a type of fish lure), just drop by the Beaver House.
Besides the double entendre of the name Beaver Flicks, Danny noticed that the letter I in FLICKS was painted yellow for a reason … can you guess why?
The World's Best Donuts …guess the name says it all. This small shack is famous not only for its donuts but for its Skizzles (a deep fried sweet yeast dough) … we can still taste the sugar and hot oil melting in our mouths.
The historic building that is now Drury Lane Books looks so prim and tidy. We discoverred that it was built in the late 1800’s by Joseph Mayhew, the first lighthouse keeper in Grand Marais.
Also in town is the interesting Bally’s Blacksmith building … it is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
When we stopped at the library, this small splash of color reminded us that fall was on the way. Little did we realize that this would be our best example of fall color for 2007. (Page 2 of 4) Copyright © 2008 TrailerGypsies.com. All Rights Reserved. |
