A German town without a brewery is like the 4th of July without fireworks. This basic expectation is amply fulfilled by the Schell Brewing Company … the oldest business in New Ulm and the second oldest family owned brewery in the nation. We toured the small processing plant and sampled the tasty brews. We especially liked the award winning Firebrick Lager and Amber Bock. Almost better than the beer, is their creamy signature 1919 Root Beer … named for the first year of Prohibition.
This solid copper brew kettle dates back to 1900 and cost $25,000 ... a huge investment for a small brewery. The capacity is about 3,500 gallons ... which Danny estimates to be a 38.3561 year supply.
This antique beer wagon and copper stein are prominently featured in the Schell Museum ... which is quartered in the original Carriage House.
Anything that has to do with beer and brewing can be found here.
Next to the brewery is a formal Victorian garden complete with deer and peacocks.. At the end of the garden is a large Germanic style brick mansion built in 1885 as Schell’s retirement home.
We especially loved this whimsical fountain. It was designed by Anton Gag and included an aviary on top. (Page 3 of 3)
